Selecting the appropriate keyboard or digital piano can be daunting, particularly if you're a beginner or seeking an upgrade. Common and crucial questions include "Which digital piano suits me best?" or "What features should I consider?" The ideal beginner keyboard differs for everyone, influenced by aspects such as sound quality, feel, playability, and polyphony.
In a digital piano, "Polyphony" denotes the highest number of distinct notes that can be played at the same time. This means how many tones can be heard simultaneously before the piano begins to "drop" previous notes to make room for new ones. Essentially, it's the restriction on the number of notes that can be sustained concurrently, unlike an acoustic piano, which doesn't have this limitation.
ELECTRIC OR ACOUSTIC?
Benefits of an Acoustic
Musical Ear Training
Playing an acoustic piano aids in developing your musical ear and enhancing creativity.
Dynamic Sensitivity
Acoustic pianos offer dynamic sensitivity, allowing precise control over the volume of each note.
Lower maintenance cost
In contrast to an acoustic piano, while you might reduce maintenance expenses, an electronic instrument won't have the same longevity. This is because acoustic instruments are typically not moved frequently, whereas electronic instruments are more likely to be transported, increasing the risk. Nonetheless, you can insure your instrument.
Comparison between Acoustic or Digital Pianos
Sound quality
Digital pianos produce a more "tinny sound", but brands such as Yamaha and Roland have a more authentic piano sound. You will however pay more for this technology. Acoustic pianos produce a natural sound but you must make sure that you tune it once a year and service it every 2 to 3 years.
Touch sensitivity
Digital pianos can simulate the touch sensitivity of an acoustic piano, but they don't have the same dynamic sensitivity. Yamaha however, has a very close technological simulation.
Versatility
Digital pianos can have a variety of features, such as different sounds and split keyboards. It all depends what's onboard and what technology can be plugged in to enhance your playing from just recording your play to multi-track / layer recording.
KEYBOARD SPECIFICATIONS
Before starting lessons, you can purchase any entry-level keyboard, provided it has touch response. This feature ensures that the keys react with varying loudness based on the pressure applied. A keyboard lacking this function won't be useful for long.
Option 1: New Instrument
The most affordable and optimal Keyboard Model with the right features is the Casio CT-X700 Portable 61-Key Piano Keyboard from approx. R4000. If it's unavailable, inquire if they have a comparable option.
I own a Yahama Digital Piano P-115 which has met my teaching and performance needs perfectly. Yamaha has discontinued this keyboard and I haven't found a similar one on the market, unless you have, let me know!
Option 2: Used Instrument
You might find the Sanchez K208 or K186 at Cash Crusaders. If they don't have in stock, they can order it for you. This is not such a good keyboard, but it is touch sensitive and can be used for a beginner. This one starts at R2000 (most of the other Sanchez brands will not work for lessons).
If you have the budget for option one, that's the one I'd suggest. It will last the longest.
KEYBOARD ACCESSORIES
Sustain Pedal:
If you do not have an acoustic piano, a sustain pedal is essential for your piano keyboard because by the second course, depending on your age, you'll use it to enhance the quality of your playing.
A sustain pedal on a piano is considered essential because it allows notes to continue sounding after the keys are released, creating a smooth connection between notes and chords, adding richness and depth to the sound, and enabling pianists to achieve legato phrasing, which is crucial for expressive playing across various musical styles. Essentially, it lets the piano sound fuller and more connected without noticeable gaps between notes.

Keyboard Bag
Making sure your keyboard, piano, synth, or other keyed instrument is safe and secure while you travel is a crucial factor in preserving both its functionality and aesthetic.
